EEG

Recording the rhythm of the brain.

What is an EEG test? An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non-invasive and pain-free test that records the electrical activity of the brain. This recording is then used to assess the health and function of your brain to make an informed assessment.

We utilise state-of-the-art EEG equipment to ensure precise results, and take time to explain the process, answer questions, and ensure you’re as comfortable as possible. We welcome adult and paediatric EEG referrals.

Approx. 60 minutes.

An EEG test is a recording obtained from small electrodes taped to the scalp. During the recording, over-breathing and flashing lights may be used to test the effects on the brain’s rhythm. It is usually used to investigate turns, epilepsy, and other brain disorders.

How to prepare.

DO

  • Have clean, dry, oil and product-free hair.
  • Eat 15 – 30 minutes prior to the appointment.

DON’T

  • Don’t consume any caffeinated drinks on the day of the appointment.

Approx. 60 minutes.

This EEG test records the rhythm of the brain’s electrical activity following a period of less than usual or no sleep. This is useful for patients who may need to be sleep deprived to reveal seizure activity or other abnormalities.

How to prepare.

DO

  • Have clean, dry, oil and product-free hair.
  • Eat 15 – 30 minutes prior to the appointment.

DON'T

  • Don’t sleep the night before your appointment. If you don't think you can do this, you can sleep between 3:00am and 6:00am the morning of the test — have as little sleep as possible, and no more than three hours.
  • Avoid tea, coffee and any other stimulants 12 hours before the appointment.
  • Driving tired is dangerous, so please don’t drive yourself to and from the appointment — have someone drive you instead.

Approx. 24 hours.

A prolonged EEG test where electrodes are applied to the scalp and worn over a 24-hour period. The equipment is applied by our Technician at SJOG Neurology, then worn at home while the recording is obtained and returned to SJOG Neurology the following day. As such, you will need two appointments 24 hours apart — each one takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

How to prepare.

DO

  • Have clean, dry, oil and product-free hair.
  • Wear loose or buttoned-up clothing. Since you’ll be wearing the electrodes for a continuous 24-hour period, this will make it easier to get changed with the equipment on.

Things to avoid.

DON’T

  • Refrain from activities that can potentially damage or wet the equipment; this includes showering or bathing.
  • Avoid heat and strenuous activity, as sweating may cause the electrodes to fall off.
  • Don’t use Bluetooth headphones, and avoid being near a laptop or phone that is plugged in/charging.
  • Refrain from consuming alcohol and illicit drugs.
  • Avoid excessive chewing, such as chewing gum.
